Siri On Android App Market...!

Keen observers noticed something strange in the Android market on Friday. The "official" Siri app, the much-talked about feature that allows users of iPhone 4S to do various tasks on their phone through voice-commands, was "available" in the Android market. It had the official Siri logo as its icon and seemed quite polished.

Of course, once experienced users installed it, they realized there was nothing "official" about the app. The app, submitted to the Android market by firm called Official App, is just a shortcut for Google's Voice action app that is standard feature on all Android phones for several years now. The app allows Android users to make calls, send SMS, play music, do web search and access several other features through voice-commands though the voice recognition and usability is not as good as what offered by Siri on iPhone 4S.

While Official App clearly mentions that Siri "is a Siri icon that opens Google's Voice Actions app" it looks like that over 1000 users who have installed the app so far failed to take note of it.

Apple guards Siri fiercely - it is not even officially available on iPad or iPhone 4 - and we can expect the app in Android market to be removed soon. While Google has a market policy where anyone can publish an app without seeking prior approval from the company, it does retain the power to remove apps that violate the terms and conditions of Android app market.
